Should University level English be a prerequisite for all university programs?

Forcing everyone interested in going to university to take university level english courses as a prerequisite puts a lot of pressure on a lot of people. Students, teachers and professors would all have to work much harder.

For starters! Having English as a prerequisite would mean that everyone who want’s to go to university has no choice but to take university English. This would mean that not only would we be adding extra work for students, but it’s work that some of them might not feel confident they can get done. That would cause a whole lot of extra stress for someone who’s just trying to get into university but doesn’t really like English as a course.

There’s also the fact that teachers would also be going through this added stress. With the amount of papers they would have to grade, the added length, plus the extra time that goes into the work of University english, it all seems like a big change for something that wouldn’t provide much of a difference in the first place.

English as a prerequisite would cause a lot more work and pressure on students as well. Students spend the majority of their high school careers worrying about getting into university and put insane amounts of pressure on themselves. Along with that, sometimes students don’t want to go to university at all but their parents force them to go, so if we made the change of having English as a prerequisite then I’m sure there would be plenty more students struggling than succeeding.

Students also endure the mental pressure and toll it takes to make such big choices at a very young age. They’re expected to have everything planned out accordingly at the beginning of high school a lot of the time in order to get into the program they want in university. That’s all a lot of pressure, plus thinking about the fact that if English were changed to a university requirement halfway through someone’s high school career, what would that mean for all the work they’ve already put in? It would be very mentally draining to have to meet another high requirement just to attend a university program.

All in all, I think we all know it would be very difficult and draining on the people involved if there were a switch to university English as a requirement for all university programs. It just doesn’t make sense and would cause a lot more stress than it’s worth.

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
